Πρωτεύουσα και κύριο λιμάνι της τοπικής ενότητας Μεσσηνίας, η Καλαμάτα βρίσκεται κατά μήκος του ποταμού Νέδωνα στην κορυφή του Μεσσηνιακού Κόλπου.
